Joyner Lucas is a American rapper noted for his politically-aware songwriting, remixes, and Grammy-nominated music videos. He was born as Gary Maurice Lucas, Jr. on August 17, 1988, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Inspired by the likes of 2Pac, Eminem, and Jay-Z, he started composing rhymes as a child and initially performed under the name of Joyner Future, ultimately changing his stage name to Joyner Lucas in 2012. In 2015, he released his first mixtape, Along Came Joyner. The record featured the well-received single “Ross Capicchioni,” a song about the shooting of a boy in Detroit, Michigan, written from the viewpoint of both shooter and victim. In 2017, he released the mixtape 508-507-2209 and scored a viral hit with the video for his song “I’m Not Racist,” which became known for its controversial lyrics. He teamed up with Chris Brown in 2018 to release the album Angels and Demons. That same year, he also appeared on the Eminem album Kamikaze, contributing heavily to the Top 10 single “Lucky You.” A fan of duets and collaborations, he earned a platinum-certified single with 2019’s “Isis,” which featured Logic, and charted another Top 40 in America with 2021’s “Your Heart,” which featured J. Cole.
