The Pirates were founded in 2003 in the city of Denver, Colorado. The founding lineup included Scott Risch on vocals and bagpipes, Steve Stackhouse on drums, Andrew Williams on bass, Matt Emrick on guitar, and Vinny Capaldo-Smith on vocals and guitar. The band are known for incorporating a wide range of influences into both their music and lyrics, with a sound ranging from folk to ska and with topics ranging from silly jokes to social issues. The band’s name derives from their lead singer’s adolescence, where he supposedly went through phases of celebrating Irish and pirate culture—the rest of the band combining these two moments to create their name! This sense of humour runs through everything the band does including their live shows, however, they also have a high-octane punk element that will satisfy fans of the genre.
