While the group formed in 2015, it was late 2019 that saw the quartet grow from beloved Chicago indie rockers bubbling under the surface to international phenoms. Call it the “TikTok Effect,” which saw many of the group’s songs (but especially the track “Prom Queen”) find a new life on the popular Gen Z social platform. Soon, media outlets — from New York Magazine’s The Cut to PAPER magazine to The New Yorker — came calling with fawning profiles. The attention for these DePaul University grads firmly transformed how and why they make music.
