Metro Station’s Mason Rookie of the Year DJ Jawz (Emo Night Brooklyn) at Club Dada

Though he has been active in South African hip-hop circles since the 2000s, DJ Jawz (born Itumeleng Sebola in 1981) doesn’t limit himself to one specific category. This can be partly attributed to influences such as DJ Fresh, DJ Christos, and Oskido, who laid the foundation for house, electro, and kwaito in South Africa. In the early 2010s, the multifaceted club DJ and radio personality was an Afrobeats advocate, and began releasing his own songs in the mid-2010s. In 2019, he jumped onto African trap (“Sukuma”), and on 2020’s “Jita,” collaborated with rappers Luna Florentino and Costa Titch. In 2021, he further demonstrated his ability to evolve sonically with the release of the amapiano-tinged “Ringo.”
